The rest is straight up from some dumb action flick sequel and feels like filler material to justify the price tag. The story is like a mix of leftovers: While the Unitology part from the beginning is relevant and interesting, it gets ditched too soon, and gone with it is any build-up or mystery. To counterweight the action, they tried to put in more psychological Horror ala Silent Hill 2 but failed at making any of that remotely smart, meaningful or simply just tense. The first third is decent overall, with the Unitology temple being the highlight in terms of artdesign and atmosphere, but after that, the game turns more and more into Gears of Uncharted and gets tonally odd to the point of being unintentionally funny. If we do eventually get the Dead Space 2 remake I absolutely cannot wait to see what Motive has planned for this Chapter… I’d have at least waited until the decontamination room to have some fun with that and push the obvious arrival later than it is.
If I have one criticism it’s that I still think the enemies come in too soon. The way that Visceral play with your expectations with certain sounds and callbacks, the gorgeous blue lighting showing off all the viscera, the classic locations now partly deconstructed via decommission… it’s so well done. And what Motive accomplished is still very faithful to what appears in the 2011 sequel’s return to the doomed ship.
I always remembered the trip back to the Ishimura because it was such a strong section when it released, but it’s especially poignant now that I’ve spent so much time on the Ishimura recently thanks to the remake. I’m replaying Dead Space 2 after going through (and loving) the Remake a few times over the past week and the sequel is still utterly fantastic. God damn, what an absolute masterclass this entire section is.
